Mel Arnold, Conservative candidate for the federal riding of Kamloops–Shuswap–Central Rockies, released the following statement today in response to the initiation of the 45th Canadian general election:

“Today, Governor General Mary Simon granted Prime Minister Mark Carney’s request for a general election.

“Canadians need and deserve an honest government focused on putting Canada first by providing stability, security, and opportunities for a brighter future for all Canadians.

“For nearly a decade, the Liberal government has put their own interests and those of their entitled friends ahead of the interests of ordinary Canadians, and those ordinary Canadians are being forced to pay for the self-interested Liberal approach.

“More than ever, Canada needs a government that works for every Canadian, not just the connected few, to unleash our individual and collective potential; a government that will bolster security in an insecure world, make life more affordable, and put Canadians first.

“Since I was first elected as a Member of Parliament in 2015, I have advocated in Parliament for the needs and priorities of constituents and conveyed these directly to government ministers.

“I have advocated for increased federal resources for affordable housing, mental health and addiction services, economic opportunities for communities, and enhanced protections for our waters and aquatic habitats.

“Indigenous communities in our region need less talk and more action on these priorities and others including water and wastewater treatment and economic development – priorities that the Liberals have failed at.

“Conservatives led by Pierre Poilievre know that a strong and prosperous Canada, independent and free of foreign interference, starts with strong leadership that is accountable, transparent, and respectful of all Canadians.

“I will continue to work hard every day for the people of the newly established riding of Kamloops–Shuswap–Central Rockies that stretches from Kamloops to the Alberta border, and I will fight for stability, security, and opportunities for a brighter future for all Canadians.”

Take a look back at these archival pages from the Golden Star and Golden News about the Kicking Horse Pedestrian Bridge.

Built in 2001 by volunteer timber framers and locals, this iconic bridge is Canada’s longest freestanding timber-frame structure and a true symbol of community connection.

Now, 25 years later, it’s time to celebrate!

Join us at Spirit Square tomorrow evening (Saturday, Sept 26) to celebrate the 25th anniversary. See you there, Golden!
